Disequilibrium between Desire and Skill
My Changing
Ambitions
I remember my Mom throwing a tantrum and shouting at me, “You should stop playing with your laptop, you’ve spent almost a day!” And it happened when I was on my 2nd year of elementary grade when she found me playing an online game at barbie.com all day long. When I was younger, I spent much time in front of computers and laptops, and was literate of Internet connection long before others, I guess. I once wanted to be a programmer, where I could build life-changing games, or revolutionize digital technology, like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.
When I was younger, I get hospitalized every year and 12 times in total until I reach 12. That’s why I also once wanted to be a doctor, where I could walk gracefully in a flapping-white-cloak and help many people’s life.
Since I was younger, I love reading. I learn English since kindergarten and read English books since elementary. I don’t know where I started it. As long as I remember, my mom and dad brought me tons of English books to read i.e. Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, those psychology books, and so on. That’s why I once wanted to be a translator and a writer, too.
As I grow up, I’m more interested in Mathematics and Chemistry; those subjects are incredibly challenging and addictive. Besides, I love every thing comes with logics. That’s why; I once planned to be a Mathematician when I was in Senior High School. I was also a student of a Science (IPA) Class in Senior High School in which those quantitative skills do matter. But, one thing I’ve always wondered; how could I use Mathematics to solve social problems and to contribute in the real life? Until one day, I found out that Economics is the answer.
What Should We Do When We Graduate?
In this step I found my desire to be an economist and skills in math reach equilibrium. I am now on my fifth semester majoring Economics, at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. First off, I should correct the title; it’s better asking what should we do now before we graduate instead. Our present represents our future. I have also known friends focusing in making things work on paper (whether academic vigor, or ideas, or concept), research, some others focusing in writing, or journalism, and some others focusing in leadership and character building, and some others focusing in the things which are not relevant to their major at all, however they’re excellent at it. So now you might have wondered, what things do we have to focus in?
I was in my denial of my own skills. Being inexperienced third-year Economics student, I am aware of my lack of in-depth knowledge to express my concern on issues I care about. I am good at something but I actually desire to be good at something else, until these nothing but fulfilling consecutive nights of contemplation.
Every One is The Master
There might be a time when Kristen Stewart once dreamed to be like Janet Yellen, Barack Obama once wished that he were Harry Styles, and yes, there’s a time—many times actually—when we wish we were him, or her, or them. I never imagine that The Sims—a life simulator games—could change the way we’re thinking about life. From the game, I realize that we all were born with traits we cannot change. Some people are more like Bella Swan than Barack Obama in the case of speaking ability, including me. We are more like an observer than an observee. However hard we try to be as capable as Barack Obama in speech, we always end up as stiff as Bella Swan. Does that make us a loser?
No. How about Stephen Hawking? How about Helen Keller? Mozart? How about most of the world’s Nobel laureates? They change the world not by their talking, but their written thoughts. Back to the question, what should I do now before I graduate and what do I concentrate? It seems perfect for me to have life working at The World Bank or United Nations, doing research, traveling the world, and educating people by some writings. My interests are so diverse, which makes it tough to focus only in my writings. To be honest, I’m also looking forward to doing research, social projects, graphic-design, video editing, but I have not found the guts to start. Overall, I will just let the calls roll.
At last, there also might be a time when Kristen Stewart finally owns up she couldn’t be like Hillary Clinton, but she is adorable by her own way, Barack Obama owns up that he will never be a good singer like Harry Styles but he is Mr. President, and yes, there comes a time when we finally own up that we might not be the next Barack Obama or the next Kristen Stewart, even if we adore them both, because we are us like I am me.
To reach equilibrium of desire and skill and to gain the competitive advantage of our own, we shouldn’t have the desire on being like Janet Yellen when we got that Barack Obama speech skill, vice versa. As a lecturer told us the students of her class, “work hard on what you’re really good at, that’s how you can be a monopolist.” Overall, I also once read this somewhere: “It’s nice to dream, and it’s nice to want, but it will come to you in its own way.” I am beaming by this one because for me, it is true.

1. I agree with you, you had chosen economics. In economics, mathematics is a tool that can be used to solve social problems and to contribute in the real life. So this the reason why i'd rather choose economics ugm than mathematics itb.
2. If i were you, i would put all of your interest in one box and serve as something different from other.
3. There is no short cut to achieve what you want, there is no reason to stop your learning. Don't stop learning about this life. Always be student.
4. No matter how much your competitor blows it up in this life. You don't let it phase you. It's about winning your life. Never show your weakness in this life and stick to your style
