Chapter 1: We Don't Think We're Poor?
I begin to notice that I didn't put much efforts to work on my blog. I guess because it requires a significant time to write one story especially a long one. So, instead of telling stories chronologically, I prefer telling you by subjects I'm interested in.
The World Bank, governments and people have been busy in fighting against poverty existing in this world. But, what if the poor themselves are not able to consider themselves as poor? If we are reflecting to what really happen in Indonesia, Land of Heaven, where you can get fruits and vegetables right in front of your houses, being poor doesn't that matter for most people. In fact, the word 'poor' itself is just a construction instead of 'welfare'. But in the world of Economics, this kind of thinking is a danger.
Kapota/Kambode, Wakatobi District, Southeast Sulawesi, is a remote area in Indonesia where I spent my two months doing a community service. I find one big issue hidden and unknown even by local government, there is no desire for most people to get out of poverty trap because they don't even know they're in the trap. In the land of archipelago, there are lots of fishes and food they can get easily without putting high amount of investment in education. What if people only live for survival, then?
I also notice that there is barely economic activity within the island. How come they didn't get revenue from tourist attractions within the island? How come the people are trapped in poverty when there are lots of bamboo, trees, fruits, fishes, seashells, surround them? How come they let other people steal their harvest and even give them more than they deserve? How come they sell something without getting profit? Is it really the ideology of Pancasila we've built and thought so far?
I will let you think first before telling you any further. Instead of discussing what is right and what is wrong though, I prefer to take one step ahead, where we could discuss what should be done afterward.
